Today I want you to take a moment to do the following:
Heal from the lies you’ve told yourself and the ones that have been told to you
Maya Angelou
Just what does it mean? Lies, I don’t lie to myself. I’m no liar, I hear you cry. Really? Are you being completely honest about this?
Let’s break this down shall we. Everyday those slight little silly side comments you say to yourself about yourself, your performance or what you look like are actually lies.
It’s a funny thing but we get used to convincing ourselves that we ‘don’t know how to do something’ or ‘I don’t think I will be any good at that’ or ’I'm not pretty enough’ or ‘I’m not confident enough to try that’ or ‘I’m heading nowhere’ and we get very stressed about it.
Don’t get me wrong I’m no saint, I have lied to myself continuously in the past, chipping away at myself. It’s hard to stop it, without even thinking about it the words tumble from your lips or run through your mind with speed. Also I have allowed others to ‘lie’ to me and encourage this vicious cycle…’You can’t do that’ or ‘why would you wear that’ or ‘Give up, this is not for you’.
But where does it get us, nowhere! Just gives us that sickly spinning feeling and then we tip over and start to believe that maybe everyone is right. Maybe I am not enough, maybe I’m not right for that job or perhaps I’m just not cut out for this. What is needed here is to take a few steps back and look at the truth instead.
One of my business mentors gave this liar a name and called it “the Top Dog”, it barks at you repeatedly and tries to stop you travelling towards the path of greatness. But no more. We have to stop the lies and think about swallowing a truth pill instead. Whatever journey or phase you are in in your life, maybe a dramatic change, loss or new challenge….focus your mind to zap the negativity and focus on the truth.
Create some affirmations for yourself to battle and kick these pesky lies away.
Yes things are difficult but I will get there
Yes starting up on your own is difficult, but I have the confidence to do this
Yes I am beautiful
I am going somewhere, to the moon and beyond if I want to
Funnel out the extra noise and focus on growing a healthy lie-free you. Remind yourself how lucky you are, how beautiful, courageous and intricate you are. Life is tough, hard, troublesome, perplexing, challenging, changeable full stop only death is easy. Harsh but true. So whilst you are here savour every moment of everything that is amazing about YOU and what YOU are trying to achieve. If you are thinking about growing your personal brand, how is someone suppose to invest in you when you are too busy believing the lies and not seeing the truth. The truth is that you are making strides slowly but surely, you are achieving in your job, you are an amazing mother and so on. Bury the stress of everyone else’s lies and your own. Build a better bullet proof you to repel the lies.
Nothing worth having in life comes easy but it is the truth that will keep you focused and aligned with your vision. Always use the truth with facts.
I’m going to leave you with this quote by Byron Katie (great book I suggest you read Loving What is…)
It is easy to be swept away by some overwhelming feeling, so it’s helpful to remember that any stressful feeling is like a compassionate alarm clock that says, “You’re caught in the dream”
We allow the lies to stress us out, but use the stress and the lies as an alarm clock (yes that annoying one that gets you up for work every morning) to wake you into reality and the truth.
Stay beautiful my UnLtd gems
