Networking can be scary and a little like a pressure pot. You want to make sure you are making the right first impressions but also you want to connect with like-minded individuals. I’ve talked before about your clothing being ‘conversationalists’ for your character and values. Have you ever complimented someone else as a way to instigate a conversation or a connection? Imagine giving someone else the room to do that to you too. I believe that your style is your spokesperson, it’s one of my manifestos. Below I discuss three areas of your style that you can use to stand out at a networking event and get connecting/building relationships with future potential clients. Colour I’ve been discussing a lot about colour this week with my Style Collective ladies, helping them identify pairings that work. Ask yourself this, at a networking event do you want to stand out or blend in? If I’m guessing correctly you want to stand out (hence why you are reading this post) over blending in. So use the colour rules to give your clothes that extra level of conversation. Complementary colours, seen above, create stark contrasts and are appealing to the eye as well as visually arresting. Use these pairings over an analogous set of colours which give a more subtle and subdued look that doesn’t have the same energy and memorability. Jewellery Ring – Amanda Wakeley; Necklace – Topshop; Earrings – David Aubrey If you know anything about me, I am a big ring fan, I discuss this at length in my wardrobe guide. I’m always asked where do I get my wonderful and weird abstract gems from. Rings are a simple conversation starter as you hold onto your glass of bubbly. Another item to consider is the statement necklace, with so many to choose from, necklaces can be a staple for many ladies’ wardrobes. Necklaces that are visually fascinating or intricate in detail are sure to provide commentary at any event. Lastly earrings are right at eye level with your fellow networkers. So use this opportunity to wear an antique item or something you bought from a independent designer to spark a common thread. Neckline Green top – Tucker; Yellow top – Hobbs The all important top-half. Not to say that your whole outfit won’t be taken into consideration, but when you are discussing the finer pointers of coaching or social media strategy, it’s an eye to eye thing. Not eye to feet! So use tops that are scoop neck to frame the face and give you that softening and approachable effect. Also by using a v-neck you open up the neckline and draw the eye into focus on this area and upwards to your face. Over to You I want to know what your networking attention-grabbing items are today. What do you think about what I have said about colours and jewellery? Leave a comment below and let me know Need Your Style Questions Answered?
Meeting and greeting people is the key to building relationships. The nitty gritty of impact, presence and connection is both in how you dress and put yourself together but also in subtle body language signals too. When you are talking to someone, eye contact is key; it’s how we connect, engage and see if you are lying..*naughty chuckle*… Ok but on a serious note, appearing alert signals to your customer/client that you are attentive and in tune with what they are saying to you. Colour plays a key role in livening up your eyes to further enhance that connection. People also remember a strong gaze and intent. So play around with contrasting clothing near your face and move your eyes from just muted and indifferent to appear more alert in conversation and vibrant. If Connection is a key style sleeve value for you, this is a useful tool to promote this. Have a look at this handy chart below (click on it to enlarge) and see how using opposing colours really rev up your eyes. OVER TO YOU Have a little play in the mirror and let me know your thoughts. Make some subtle changes, notice what differences you see and leave a comment below. LEARN HOW TO MAKE AN IMPACT Do you want to connect with more potential clients? Do you want your face and eyes to be more open, responsive and approachable towards people? Failing to turn up the volume on you, your style and your confidence could be the difference between working and spending more time with a new client or not. If you want to learn more connection, colour and impact techniques, head over to the Style Collective today. It’s the place to be to take yourself off mute and start building the right connections. Click here for more details Until next time Samantha x

View your style as your mouthpiece to tell the world just what you value and feel on the inside. In this little interlude, I will discuss the ‘visual conversation’ of clothes, so that you know exactly how to put your style sleeve values into play. So speak to me darling…what are you saying? Well: Connection – Her outfit is inviting, approachable and sensitive to her. Her pose whilst casual and relaxed is a little defensive with the hands in pocket. But she’s comfortable in her own skin, authentic, no need for the ‘show’. The fabrics are soft, more substance over style, tactile whilst still being composed. Playful - For all the laid-back chic there is the hint of surprise. Not completely fuss free, the shoes show a subdued spirit in her and an element of unknown surprise. Opinionated and vocal about her passions. The oranges and pinks lift the mood of the outfit and the symmetry in the straight lines continue from the clothes to the shoe design. The shoes ruffle feathers in a way that suits her. Clarity – There’s an honesty to her colour palette, tonally it hits the right notes for her and she’s a woman who tells it like it is. Plus the colour selection lengthens her body. Treading the lines of relaxed feminine mystic with a slight toughness, she exudes her grace without needing to draw attention to her body. Coffee with her would be fantastic, I want to know what she has to say. A simmering mystery indeed. Enjoyed this?
What do you tell yourself when you reach for a dress or a top in a shop, but then put it back in doubt? I don’t know if I can wear this I‘m not sure this is for me What will ‘people’ think I don’t have the body for that Ooh this nice but I cant afford it. It’s a bit daring isn’t it…not really me Above are perhaps some of the little things that you might think as you wonder away from *enter item in here* and head towards your trusted comfort zone. You may see several things that jump out at you all bright and new, intriguing, temping to touch…but then you retreat…wonder off into the abyss of “I might come back and try it on” But you never do Today I want to encourage you to play dress up and really experiment with clothes. Why? Well because it is only through experimenting that you learn what works and what doesn’t. It’s only through checking it out in the changing room, eyeing up the fit and the fabric, looking at the colour against your face…doing your little power strut in front of the mirror that you can fully justify all the doubts I mentioned above. When we were younger we learned a lot through play, trial and error and experimenting but as we grew up it all got a bit too serious. All the fun of shopping has been sucked out like a vacuum. But it doesn’t have to be this way. The only way you are going to make real headway establishing your style, finding clothes and shops that really work for you is to tap into your inner child again. TAKE THE STYLE CHALLENGE - Take an afternoon and just head into a few shops. Have a look at the dainty little gems on the rail that catch your eye. BUT instead of retreating, grab a few, find your nearest changing room and just PLAY. Make this your ‘dressing up box’ session So what if it doesn’t fit or you realise you hate the feeling of the fabric. Great, you learnt something! On the flip side you might find a gem. You would have previously dismissed it if you just walked away. Make shopping like play…it’s not a chore, this is your fun time for real. It’s all part of the journey. Invest in the time to really connect with yourself, what’s in the shops and what you do/don’t like about specific items of clothes. It doesn’t need to take all day. ‘Playtime’ can also work at home with your online purchases too. Go on give it a try and let me know what you discover and think by leaving a comment or a message on the Facebook page. What will you try today? Speak soon Samantha xx If you want to start to harness your ‘inner child’ when it comes to shopping, have a play in the Style Collective. Join today here

How do I wear colours that don’t work for me? Every season Pantone brings out a selection of colours that will dominate in the shops. I’m not a massive fan of some of these colours and I get a lot of emails from ladies baffled by just how to find what works for them in the shops. A barrage of pastels, it is enough to send anyone in a tailspin. But all is not lost. What to look for when a colour doesn’t work for you: Immediately you will see the dark shadows under the eyes The flushing or bearding around the mouth You can start to look a bit sallow and washed out.. So your immediate instinct would be to run….BUT below are four of the best ways to incorporate colours which don’t work for you into your wardrobe Nail varnish – your nails are as far away from your beautiful face so have a play with grey jades and lemon zests until your heart is content Jewellery - Rings again keeping the colour away from the face. Play around with necklaces in the ‘danger’ colours you adore but make sure you wear a top with a higher neckline like a polo neck or high round neck in your ‘wow’ colours. Your ‘wow’ colour should be the main one which reflects up into your face and keeps you looking healthy. Choose a longer necklace preferably long drop pendants one Leather it up - with either bags, belts or shoes with a mixture of your complementary colours and a smidgen of the ‘danger’ trend colour. Or if you dare to be a bit risque go it solo. Scarves – I always suggest that scarves provide a great way for your to wear a colour that doesn’t work for you in a top or a dress, so long as you have the scarf is in a shade that is perfect for you. This is the colour which reflects into the face not the one in the top or dress. Items to avoid in colours that don’t work for you Sunglasses – it’s a fairly obvious item, but these items frame your face they have to be complementary. There is plenty of time for clashing elsewhere on the body but keep sunglasses and reading glasses in your neutral foundation colours So never fear there is always a way to get round it. If you want some immediate answers or help on how to pair up colours that work for you why not join our Style Collective. It’s a warm engaging environment to give you the best advice to turn up the volume on your style and get you out there looking and feeling great! Until next time Samantha xx

View your style as your mouthpiece to tell the world just what you value and feel on the inside. In this little interlude, I will dissect a visual feast so that you know exactly how to put your style sleeve values into play. Image credit Karl-Edwin Guerre Isn’t she stunning! So speak to me darling…what are you saying? Well…… Strength, Newness, Timeless Strength – Sophisticated and striking play with primary colours red & blue ensures this lady sets her ground. The red trousers are determined and sharp, waving a flag that says “Hey I’m here”. The watch is slightly masculine too, this is a woman who dares and plays to win. Newness – The useful tricks played with lines in the jacket and checked shirt shows this lady is willing to take a risk. Albeit quite a traditional look she has gone for this little energetic illusion to upset the status quo of a normal shirt/jacket/trouser combo Timeless – The cuts of the coat and jacket suggest that whilst she is willing to experiment with colour and print, nothing beats a classic shape. Nothing says classic either like a killer red lip. So…what do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts below leave me comment or come and talk to me over on the Facebook page here.
Wondering what to buy for the Spring/Summer months ahead? (When it does actually get warm!) Below is a list of the most ubiquitous trends, although we’re style rather than trend led, we figured out a way for you to navigate the ‘noise’ . So beat the procrastination blues and look at what we’ve picked out for each entrepreneur profile. PEOPLE PERSON Taking inspiration from the increasingly global fashion market and the rise of developing countries such as India and China, the mood for the oriental trend is both blooming and beautiful with stores picking up on the details of the trend including kimono sleeves, statement and subtle blossom motifs, mandarin collars and the hummingbird for print. The best part is that this is a trend that can be executed in the most fine and detailed sense, or presented with a bang. If you’re feeling brave, this signature is a sure way to make get people engaging with you. THE TRADITIONALIST White, though simple sounding, is a trend making a statement this season. Pure, virginal white was seen everywhere countering the futurist and forward thinking trends of seasons past. This is a trend that is providing a fresh feel to clothing is perfect for ‘the traditionalist’. A white shirt is a winner for every occasion, and for work, is a smart, as well as stylish, way to make your presence known. What’s more, the simplicity of white allows you to jazz it up whatever way works for you, whether that’s a scarf, a statement necklace, or some printed trousers. CREATIVE HIPSTER Geometric prints are also securing their position this season. The nature of the trend allows those working in creative industries to really play with pattern and have some fun with their attire. Whether you feel like taking a monochrome approach or braving the cool and colourful items, geometric print looks great paired with a simple pencil skirt, or tucked in some tailored trousers. HOMEWORKER Stripes are also going to be appearing quite literally up and down everywhere.
‘OMG Samantha, my style is in need of a recovery plan! Can you help me?’ This was the lovely intro of an email I received from a client recently and here is some of my reply to her. I gave her 5 starter steps to take her style from flunking in the major success tests to start on a journey of discovery without the style woes. They are as follows: What’s really getting your goat? Is it because of your wardrobe or is it YOU? – Sometimes we have moved warp speed ahead in our personal development and our wardrobe is limping behind barely out of the starting blocks. First things first identify if it is something you aren’t happy with in yourself – is it a self confidence or self esteem issue, nerves or shyness and you think a new style will help alleviate this? A fancy new dress is only going to paper over the cracks. Get to the root of what’s really lurking around and address that then examine your clothes. If you have done the soul searching and all you need is a wardrobe to match the improved you….onto the next point. How do you want to come across? What is the clothing story you want to give your personal brand? We all want to make the right first impression so what is the message you want to say to the world? Have a think about the key qualities that you desire to show and also why. In your entrepreneurial role, how do you want your clothes to demonstrate what you are about? Name and claim your style sleeve announcement! It’s important to get to grips with your style personality and identity to prevent you just being sweep up in new style whims and trends. It’s easy to fall in love with a new style and want to throw out your old wardrobe in a flash. But by using your style sleeve announcement as your anchor and style steering rod you will begin to filter out what really works for you and what isn’t working and why Take some time to get savvy! How do you feel in specific items of clothing? What are your ‘grab and go’ looks that you currently have that you feel great in? What do you notice about them? Is it the colours, is it the cut, is it the fabric? Too often we get disconnected from our style because we get disconnected from how we feel in certain items. Too busy chasing the next style rollercoaster that we forget ‘Hang on…I don’t actually like turquoise or peplum skirts’. Really get to grips with how you feel in specific clothes. What is your body telling you? Evolution begins with small steps. Start to create your own Style Scrapbook for your recovery plan. Pinterest is great to start curating key pieces and styles you admire. But dig deep, get to grips with why you like particular styles – does it express a value you aspire to, are the images playing with colours in ways you have never experimented with before or are your drawn to try new fabrics? Don’t literally just copy another style, look at what you like, identify how to put your spin on it and off you go….a style revolution has begun. Take some time out to really get to know YOU. Find your anchor that will prevent you from ever going astray and needing a recovery plan. I’d love to hear what you think about this recovery plan. What would you add or start with, leave a comment below or head over to the Facebook page…I’d love to hear your thoughts. Until next time Samantha xx
